Kia has built a strong reputation for tech-savvy, design-rich, affordable cars, with a particular knack for smaller cars and crossover SUVs.
Kia is one of only three brands to increase U.S. sales in each of the last four years.
In 2012, the company surpassed the 500,000 mark for the first time ever.
Top-selling vehicles like the midsized Optima car and Sorento crossover helped make Kia a member of the “Top 100 Best Global Brands”.
But now Kia seems to be changing their game, or, more appropriately, joining another game. With the now-available Cadenza and soon-to-arrive K900, Kia is moving into the large luxury sedan segment.
Kia has been successfully competing against automakers like Honda and Toyota, but it now seems to have its sights set on Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.
So why is Kia putting their ball in a new court? The answer is actually quite simple.
Why Kia is Going Luxury
Like all industries, automotive brand recognition is a big deal. When you hear the word “Mercedes” you probably think of highly refined sedans. When you hear the word “Jeep”, you picture a go-anywhere SUV.
Kia, which already has a great reputation, wants to enhance the image of the brand by offering a different type of vehicle.
Michael Sprague, Kia’s VP of Marketing and Communication, said that Kia’s rise over the past few years has been “fueled by a willingness to challenge the status quo”. Cars like the Cadenza and K900 certainly cdo just that.
“The K900 is the next logical progression for Kia. It demonstrates what Kia is capable of and will help redefine what the Kia brand stands for.”
– Michael Sprague, VP of Kia Marketing and Communication
While Kia will maintain the value and quality that has made them so popular, luxury vehicles will show that the brand is capable of hanging with the big dogs, bringing even more exposure and recognition to an already celebrated brand.
