The Kia Soul is getting an electric edition

At the national unveiling of the 2014 Kia Soul, Kia Motors announced plans for an all-electric version of the urban passenger vehicle, with plans to make the vehicle available for select markets next year.

The Soul is already one of Kia’s top-selling vehicles, and an all-electric variant seems like a perfect fit for the brand’s high-tech lineup.

More details about the Soul EV’s powertrain and range capacity are expected to be announced at an upcoming U.S. auto show.

Kia leaders also talked about the already-low environmental footprint of the Kia Soul, saying that 85% of the current vehicle’s materials are recyclable, making it the perfect fit for an electric powertrain.

“The Soul EV will further demonstrate Kia’s engineering capabilities as well as our commitment to producing vehicles with reduced environmental footprints.”

- Orth Hedrick, Kia Director of Product Planning

The Soul EV is expected to bring an excellent blend of technology, style, and improved dynamics. According to a press release from Kia, the goal of the Soul EV is to “create a car that is as efficient as it is fun to drive”.

For 2013, the Optima Hybrid has received numerous upgrades, including a stronger electric traction motor, generator, and lithium polymer battery.

Thanks to vehicles like these, as well as efforts at Kia’s facilities, the automaker was ranked by Interbrand as one of the “50 Best Global Green Brands”.
