Kia is getting ready for its second season in the Pirelli World Challenge with two turbo-charged Optimas taking the track on Saturday.
The Kia Optima had a great rookie season last year in the Grand Touring Sport class, bringing home two victories, six podium finishes, and an amazing reliability record.
Kia Racing is partnered with Kinetic Motorsports, which offers a complete array of services from race car building to project assistance.
Although the start of the season is now days away, the turbocharged Kia Optimas have been under a fine comb since the 2012 season ended in August. The racing team spent the off-season dialing in their cars and inspecting every nut, bolt, weld, and spring on the Optimas.
There isn’t much of an “off” in the off-season for Kia Racing. In addition to the work we did in the shop we were able to conduct a proper on-track testing and development program, which…we weren’t able to do before the start of last season.
– Russell Smith, co-owner of Kinetic Motorsports
Kia has two Optimas in the GTS class this season:
- The #36 car, driven by Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge champion Nic Jonsson
- The #38 car, piloted by returning driver Mark Wilkins, who earned a pole, two podium finishes, and a win in 2012.
Kia made history last year at St. Petersburg by becoming the first Korean car company to compete in the Pirelli World Championship.
The first round of competition is on Saturday, March 23rd at 4:00 PM central time. The second round starts on Sunday, March 24th at 9:25.
Kia Optima’s Performance and Style is Being Noticed
Kia has seen climbing sales, led Optima, which sold 11,252 units in January of 2013.
Kia has made itself one of the fastest growing car companies, both globally and right here in America. Consumers appreciate the cars sporty performance, intelligent design, and sophisticated technology. A strong racing presence is just a small part of the increasingly noticeable brand.
The Pirelli World Challenge is an American racing series that was founded in 1985. The series currently consists of four classes: Grand Touring, Touring Car, Grand Touring Sport, and Touring Car B-Spec.
