Kia has announced that they will be adding a full-size rear-wheel drive flagship sedan to their lineup, moving the brand further in the U.S. luxury segment.
The new vehicle will be called the Kia K900 and is expected to be available early 2014.
Kia has been moving into higher tiers of the luxury market, starting with the 2014 Kia Cadenza which arrived in showrooms this year.
The Kia K900 will be similar to the Kia K9 sold in South Korea and the Kia Quoris, which is sold in many overseas markets.
It will be the first time Kia has ever sold a rear-wheel drive sedan in the U.S.
The K900 is expected to have advanced safety technology, luxury features, and as much as 420 hp, all in a vehicle similar in size to the BMW 7 Series.
Don Hobden, Kia’s national dealer council chairman, met with Kia officials at a private meeting. According to Hobden, the K900 was described as “a 7 series value for a 5 series price.”
A report from Automotive News says thats the Kia K900 will likely feature a 3.8L V-6 and a 5.0L V-8 engine. The V-8 will produce around 420 hp, while the V-6 output will be around 290 hp.
The model is also expected to have adaptive cruise control, 17-inch premium audio speakers, and an intuitive Heads-Up Display.
Football fans should keep an eye out for the K900 during the upcoming Super Bowl. Kia plans to use the big game as a launching platform for the K900, as it did for the redesigned Sorento and Forte earlier this year.
