Kia Motors Makes Two Education-Based Announcements

Kia Motors of America has made two significant announcements in helping education-based charity and non-profit programs.

One uses hands-on learning to teach teen drivers how to stay safe behind the wheel, while the other assists school teachers in finding donations for specific learning projects.

Both of these projects continue Kia’s well-established tradition of philanthropy and community outreach.

Kia Furthers Partnership with

DonorsChoose LogoKia has announced that it will extend its relationship with, the online charity that connects teachers with potential donors.

Kia is launching a funding campaign that will put the company’s total impact to $5 million in just two years.

Earlier this year Kia highlighted in a marketing campaign with NBC’s show “The Voice” and made contributions to the charity group’s effort to rebuild 60 classrooms destroyed by the tornadoes in Oklahoma.

How Works

DonorsChooseThe best ideas are often the most simple, and is a perfect example.

The site lets teachers register donation requests for specific needs or projects. For example, teachers can request donations for needed books, calculators, music and art supplies, science equipment, and even funding for class trips.

Donors can then go online, browse the specific requests by subject, age group, location, etc., and donate to the specific project or school of their choosing.

Like science? Donate to science projects. Read a lot? Donate to literature and book requests.  Live in Waterloo? Donate to schools in that area. It’s just that simple.

Kia Teams With B.R.AK.E.S. To Teach Teens Safe Driving Habits

BRAKES LogoB.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) has provided teen drivers with safe driving instruction courses for more than 8,000 students across the U.S. and Canada.

Kia support, which includes 32 Kia vehicles, will provide teenage drivers with a curriculum which includes an array of defensive techniques and awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.

The free, hands-on training covers five specific categories:

  • Accident Avoidance/Slalom: Simulates hazards and forces students to make split-second reactions
  • Distracted Driving: Demonstrates the dangers that texting, cell phone use, and other distractions present during driving.
  • Drop Wheel/Off Road Recovery: Teaches effective recovery from drop-wheel situations by regaining control and returning to the roadway.BRAKES pic
  • Panic Stop: Instructs students in proper braking techniques, effects of ABS, and how to control braking at the shortest distance possible.
  • Car Control and Recovery: Uses a wet skid pad to simulate slick road conditions, teaching students to recover from over-steer and under-steer skids.

The 3-1 student-teacher ratio ensures personal attention and individual instruction to each student, maximizing the effectiveness of the courses.

Kia Motors Named to 50 Best Global Green Businesses List

Thanks to a history of sustainability and environmental performance, Kia Motors has been named to Interbrand’s list of 50 Best Global Green Businesses.

Kia-logoFor the list, Interbrand assessed businesses primarily on two factors: market perception, and the actual environmental performance.

Kia was named #37 on the list. This comes on the heels of Kia Motors being named to the 100 Best Global Brands 2012, where the company landed at #87.

Fuel-efficiency in Kia Cars and SUVs

For an automaker, the most obvious source of green-minded performance comes from fuel-efficiency ratings.

While many manufacturers are trying to maintain compliance, Kia has worked to consistently remain ahead of national and global emissions standards. Kia continuously improves its average fuel consumption over a wide range of vehicles.

Kia has implemented the latest green technologies into its growing lineup under the EcoDynamics umbrella. Kia has developed hybrid powertrains for the brand’s Forte models in Korea and Optima models in the U.S. and abroad, and has used plug-in technology, full-electric vehicles, and even spear-headed hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle initiatives.

Here are some of the fuel-efficiency number for Kia’s most popular vehicles:
Numbers from U.S. News & World Report, highway mpg.

  • 2013 Kia Optima Hybrid: 40 mpg
  • 2013 Kia Rio: 37 mpg
  • 2013 Kia Soul: 30 mpg
  • 2014 Kia Forte: 37 mpg

More than Just Saving Gas at the Pump

While Kia’s efforts to save gas consumption and harmful emissions are highly commendable, it is also important to recognize the efforts that Kia has made in the manufacturing and design process.

Kia has worked to increase total operating efficiency, which not only saves resources but also creates more affordable cars, and to reduce water consumption during manufacturing.

We applaud Kia Motors’ efforts aimed at sustainability in all facets of its global operations that have enabled the company to be named as one of our Best Global Green Brands 2013.
