Every Little Bit Helps When It Comes To Saving Gas Money!

If you’re like most drivers, you’re sick of shelling out what seems like most of your hard earned money on gas. One solution is we can all go out and buy new hybrid or electric vehicles and zoom around in tiny little smart cars — but even if you’re not in the market for a new EV, there are other ways you can save money at the pump.

Smart Tips For Saving Gas Money

Download a ‘Gas Station Finder App’.  According to one of the top Kia dealers in the Cedar Rapids area this is one of the best first steps you can take. The built-in GPS technology of most smart phones allows you to use these gas station finder apps while you’re driving. Not only do these apps assist you in finding a gas station close in proximity, but they also give you the gas prices at several gas stations.

Change your spark plugs regularly. Most of us seldom think about changing the spark plugs on our vehicles, but this does help with fuel consumption. Spark plugs are easy to replace, inexpensive, and do not last as long as their manufacturers claim they do!

Fill Up Your Gas Tank Properly. Always fill it to the maximum capacity, instead of adding a half tank here and a quarter tank there. This ensures that you will save money and time by not making several trips to the gas station and idling your engine while in line for a pump.

Do Not Top Off Your Gas Tank. Doing this actually pushes gas into the emissions system and wastes your money.

Let your tank reduce to a quarter of its capacity before filling it up, but do not go less than that. Traveling on a quarter tank means you’re actually carrying lighter cargo, which increases fuel mileage.

Fill Your Tires With Air Regularly. By following the manufacturer’s pressure guidelines, you’ll actually increases fuel mileage. Most gas stations have tire-filling machines that are either free to use or have very minimal cost.

Starting Small Can Make a Huge Difference

Some of these tips may seem like common sense, and some might even seem kind of pointless. However, each small action you take will add up to keep more money in your pocket. Hopefully we can all start spending less on fuel as the prices for it keep going up!

Night Driving Safety Tips

Drive Safely at Night

2012 Kia Optima

Night driving can be a scary proposition: death rates are three times higher during night driving than during the day. Driving safely at night doesn’t have to be a life-threatening proposition, though. As your trusted Kia dealer near Cedar Rapids, we’d like to offer the following tips to help you stay safe.

  • Keep Your Lights Clean – One of the simplest ways to stay safe at night is to keep your headlights properly cleaned. Dirt, mud, and oxidization can cause your headlights to lose effectiveness. This causes problems by decreasing your range of vision, but it can also create issues if other drivers can’t see your turn signals. Clean your headlights yourself or have an expert on your make of car do it for you.

  • Don’t Drink (Or Smoke) and Drive – This tip seems pretty obvious, but a significant number of all road accidents at night are caused by drunk drivers. However, smoking can also cause problems when driving at night, as nicotine and carbon monoxide decrease your range of vision while in your system. Plus, smoke floating through your car can also hamper your view.

  • Reduce Speeds – The modern world is a busy place, and we all want to get where we need to go as fast as possible. However, decreasing your speed by even five mph can give you more time to react to sudden occurrences such as deer or people in the road. A five mph decrease will only shorten your arrival time by a few minutes, which is a good trade-off for avoiding serious accidents.

  • Managing Brights – Keeping your brights on increases your range of view and helps illuminate the eyes of any creature that may run across the road. However, brights also cause huge distractions to oncoming traffic as well as anybody you might be following, so make sure to use them only when it’s appropriate. It is also a good idea to keep your brights off when driving in a city or residential area.

Gas Station App Top 5:

Whether you’re looking for the best price at the pump or just in need of a quick fill up, these Top-5 gas finder apps will help you along the way.

  1. Smartfuel – This app offers you the ability to bookmark your favorite stations on your route and features an accurate and comprehensive station listing. Easy to use, Smartfuel is offered first as a 30-day free trial and requires a paid subscription after that. Pricing is reasonable (US $4.99 for 6 months, $14.99 for 24 months); if you’re a frequent traveler this subscription can pay for itself in no time at all.
  1. Fuel Finder – This easy-to-use app doesn’t require a subscription, only a $2.99 app fee, and assists you with its “On Fumes” feature that locates the closest gas station or gets you roadside assistance when you’re dangerously low on gas.
  1. GasBuddy – This is a completely free app that does help you locate gas stations, however on occasion it overlooks some stations and has a few errors in pricing
  1. RoadAhead – This is really more of an all-in-one-travel app rather than just a gas station app, as it also provides the listing of amenities available near highway exits and rest stops. Keep in mind though that its primary focus is what’s available at the rest stops and exits instead of just gas stations, so finding a station might take some extra scrolling.
  1. Fuel Smart Pro – This app offers solid features, comprehensive gas station listings, and accurate gas prices, but be warned that its interface is a little less than user-friendly.

Living with a High Mileage Vehicle

Whether you’ve had your Kia for some time now or you’re just putting starting to put a few extra miles on, scheduling regular maintenance is the best way to ensure the longevity of your vehicle. While recommendations vary from service center to center, here’s some guidelines for common maintenance services, though bear in mind that you’ll do no harm having your vehicle serviced more frequently:

–    Every 3,000 miles – add fuel injector cleaner to your gas tank, and above all, change your oil and oil filter.

–     Every 5,000 miles – get your clutch adjusted in manual transmission cars.

–     Every 10,000 miles – rotate your tires and inspect your engine belts.

–    Every 30,000 miles – replace spark plugs and their wires, replace your distributor cap and rotor, inspect shocks for leakage, and change your transmission fluid.

–    Every 6 months – check your power steering fluid and wax your car to prevent the onset of rust.

–     Every year – inspect your brakes, hoses and clamps, and check fluid levels.

–    Every two years – flush your coolant system and check your battery’s performance levels.

We know this can seem daunting, but chances are you’re probably doing a fair bit of it already. By adhering to these maintenance checkpoints, you can ensure that your vehicle lives a long life. If nothing else, try to get your vehicle in to our shop for an engine tune-up every once in a while to take care of the necessities.

If you’re looking for a new car dealership to call your own, choose McGrath Kia in Hiawatha. With our incredible selection of vehicles, affordable prices, and highly skilled technicians, it’s no wonder Iowans trust us with their vehicle needs. But much more than just selling vehicles, we want to help keep you and your family safe, so let’s talk about how you can set your vehicle’s mirrors properly to eliminate blind spots.

Eliminating Blind Spots By Adjusting Your Mirrors

Many people don’t give their car mirrors much consideration. Most conduct a brief adjustment and drive off without realizing if they have set them properly. But actually, there is a right way to position your mirrors:

Do a quick check.

If you look in your side mirrors and see your car, then you’re not using your mirrors very effectively. It’s common that people have a large overlap with field of view between the side and center mirrors, which is unnecessary. Adjusting your mirrors so that they are working in concert can help eliminate blind spots.

Optimize Your Rear View

The first thing to do is adjust your driver side mirror. In the driver seat, lean your head all the way to the left, against the window. Adjust the mirror so that you can just see the rear quarter panel of the car. Next lean all the way to the right and adjust the passenger side mirror so that you can just see the rear quarter panel of that side. Adjust the center rearview mirror normally so that you can see directly out of the rear window. Notice, now, the little amount of overlap shared between the mirrors.

Safety First!

While this should go without saying, as a safety measure remember to never adjust your mirrors while driving and always look over your shoulder before changing lanes. While this method has been proven to eliminate blind spots, it’s always a good idea to look back and check for bikes or anything else around your car.
