2013 Kia Sportage Named One of the Best Back-to-School Cars

It won’t be long and football will be on TV, the leaves will start to turn, and students will head back to the classroom.

2013 Kia SportageSummer is winding down, and with that in mind, Kelley Blue Book released its list of the Best Back-to-School Cars, with the Kia Sportage making the grade.

The publication focused on style, safety, fuel-economy, and versatility, and because students are always on a budget, KBB only looked at cars starting under $20,000.

With numerous standard features, a hearty warranty, with a low prices, the sporty compact crossover landed at #6 on the top-ten list.

Back to School in Style: 2013 Kia Sportage

The annual list seeks to assist college-bound students and their parents make informed, educated decisions when it comes time to purchasing a vehicle. The Kia Soul earned top honors last year, making the Sportage the 2nd Kia vehicle named to the list.

“Your hard-earned $20,000 buys a lot of car these days. Case in point, the stylish Kia Sportage offers up real SUV versatility, a bounty of standard features and a lengthy warranty at a very student-friendly price. That it’s recognized as a 2013 IIHS Top Safety Pick doesn’t hurt, either.”

– Kelley Blue Book

Considering Kia’s involvement with education, this honor seems appropriate. Kia has made charitable contributions to education-based groups, including B.R.A.K.E.S, which conducts driver safety training for teens, and DonorsChoose, which connects under-funded schools with would-be donors.

Standard features in the 2013 Sportage include the following:

  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Body-color door handles
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Leather-wrapped shift knob
  • Brake Assist System
  • Traction Control
  • Hill Assist Control
  • Front LED Accent Lights

“Kelley Blue Book’s recognition of Sportage as one of the 10 Best Back-to-School cars validates Kia’s competitive presence within the ever-growing compact CUV segment”

– Michael Sprague, Kia VP of Marketing

Kia’s Influential Design

2013 Kia Sorento

2013 Kia Sorento

When Kia started selling cars in the United States in 1992 their design was practical, but perhaps unassuming. The design was neutral and from just looking at it, you might not know what manufacturer or even country the car had come from. In 2005 Kia decided that design was its primary recipe for future growth and rethought the entire process of creating their cars.

At McGrath Kia in Cedar Rapids we find that our customers think Kias are the best looking cars out there. Their distinctive lines are instantly recognizable, and they’re the product of Kia head designer Peter Schreyer’s vision. Schreyer is a German auto-designer famous for being one of the designers that created the incredibly influential Audi TT that debuted in 1998. The influence of the Audi TT’s swooping rounded top that blends smoothly into the trunk and hood created a smooth aerodynamic look that has been replicated by many ever since. Schreyer moved to the Kia auto group and brought a level of design verve and panache to the new model years. Here are two of the notable achievements in the current line of Kias.

Tiger Nose

The most distinctive part of any Kia is what has been dubbed the Tiger Nose. This is the unique shape of the grille and front fascia. If you squint you can see that it does look like a cat’s nose in a way. Schreyer introduced the Tiger Nose as a powerful brand identifier to help people immediately know that a Kia is a Kia. It’s a bold design move and was instituted across all Kias after 2007. Schreyer said, “Tigers are powerful, yet kind of friendly” to explain what he wanted the design to convey.

The Soul

The Kia Soul has been a hot spot for car design for the last few years. The bold slanting roof design is both practical and striking. The Soul has also been a place to experiment with special edition and product collaborations. For example, the Soul Hamster and the Soul Denim are playful variations with exciting custom features, paint, and interior touches.

The new 2013 Kias are all boldly designed and embody the powerful yet friendly ethos that’s motivating Kia’s design department. Visit our online inventory to take a look.

Enhanced safety features are now standard equipment on just about all of the new cars being manufactured today. At Pat McGrath Kia, the leading Iowa Kia dealer, we know that the difference is in the craftsmanship, engineering, and design of an automobile. A great choice for your next family car, the 2013 Kia 4-door comes equipped with a LATCH system. This Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children has been heralded by a wide range of child health and safety organizations, as well as major insurance companies, as one of the best vehicle safety innovations for children.

There is a full array of important standard safety features on the Optima, including:

  • a high-tensile steel-reinforced body
  • anti-lock brakes
  • electronic stability control

If you’re looking for a safe vehicle that you can depend on, then head down to our Cedar Rapids-area Kia dealership and ask one of our friendly and experienced sales associates for more information on the brand new 2013 Kia Sportage. We understand that safety is a huge deciding factor when many car buyers visit our Kia dealer in Hiawatha, so let’s take a look at some of the safety features that are fully equipped in the spacious sedan.

A Look at the Safety Features of the 2013 Sportage

Let’s start with one of the Sportage’s most important safety features: airbags. The Kia Sportage features dual front advanced airbags; when you’re using the seatbelts properly, the advanced system will detect when there’s a passenger in the front seat, monitor how serious the impact is, and control the airbag’s inflation to lower the amount of injuries the passenger could experience during a collision.

To the left of the driver is the full-length side curtain airbags with rollover sensor. This safety feature is able to detect when a rollover is about to happen and activate the seatbelt pretensioners, side airbags, and side curtain airbags.

The passenger’s first line of defense in the event of an accident is always the seat belt. The 2013 Sportage features front and rear 3-point seat belts to lower the chance of injury following an accident. The front active headrests are also there to reduce any neck, head, and spinal injuries during rear collisions. This system was created to move the headrests forward when a collision happens to lower the whiplash movement of your head.

Front seatbelt pretensioners are there to keep you safe during collisions. They work at tightening the seatbelts by pulling the driver and passenger into their seat – keeping you snug. Having these pretensioners will reduce the amount of injuries that could happen during an accident.
